Job Description

Sioux Falls Lutheran School is seeking a full-time Health & Physical Education Teacher, Assistant Athletic Director and Coach responsible for creating a Christ-centered environment that fosters, promotes, and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for helping K-12 students develop strength, skill, agility, poise, coordination, and sportsmanship/Christian character development in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability. The candidate will also serve as head coach of 9-man football and/or track and field; and assist our athletic director with oversight of athletic/activities programs, scheduling and supervision.

Job Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree in Education with appropriate health and physical education endorsements.

A valid South Dakota Teacher Certificate or willingness to obtain one.

A passion for serving K-12 learners and their families in a Christian setting.

Knowledge/experience using effective and developmentally appropriate instructional strategies.

Creative, resourceful, flexible, and collaborative team member.

Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing South Dakota content learning standards as a guide.

Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning and implementing a balanced physical education program.

Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.

Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with South Dakota content learning standards; provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.

Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive Christ-centered environment in the physical education areas.

Provide appropriate safety instructions and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.

Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.

Maintain control of storage and use of school property.

Evaluate each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.

Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.

Supervise students in out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.

Administer testing in accordance with best testing practices.

Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.

Head coaching duties for 9-man football and/or track and field.
